Bonn, September 16, 2026 – Email marketing is entering a new era of quality standards: content must not only be delivered and displayed correctly but also reliably recognized, categorized, and processed by AI-powered inboxes in their respective usage contexts. The Elaine AI Inbox Lab analyzed 521,000 commercial emails from over 6,000 European companies across 22 industries between Q1 2022 and Q2 2026. A key finding from the preliminary evaluation: in 2026, only 2.8% of assessed email programs achieved an AI readiness score greater than zero. The average score stands at just 1.6 out of 100 points. The score measures the structural preparedness of email content for processing by AI-driven systems. The results reveal that standardized, clearly structured, and context-optimized content is still rarely implemented systematically. At the same time, technical delivery quality has improved significantly. The corresponding indicator rose from 55.5 points in 2022 to 82.7 points in 2026. The next evolutionary step for email marketing is no longer just about delivery – it’s about the quality, accessibility, and structural processability of content.

AI Readiness: Structural Preparedness Still Largely Absent

In 2026, the average AI readiness score is just 1.6 out of 100 possible points. Several industries –including finance, telecommunications, automotive, healthcare, and insurance – scored exactly zero. The leaders are e-commerce (7.6 points) and the travel sector (6.8 points), reflecting the higher priority placed on offer communication in these fields.

Technical Compliance: Clear Upward Trend

The compliance indicator shows significant improvement over time, rising from 55.5 points in 2022 to 82.7 points in 2026. The largest year-over-year increase occurred between 2024 and 2025, with a jump of 15.5 points. Evolving requirements and regulatory pressure may have driven this shift – during this period, the Certified Senders Alliance (CSA), Google, and Yahoo updated their email acceptance rules.

Accessibility: High Need for Improvement Despite New Requirements

The average accessibility score remains low at 40.7 points. Since June 28, 2025, Germany has enforced the Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (Accessibility Reinforcement Act), which implements the European Accessibility Act for certain products and services, including electronic commerce. While this does not impose a blanket obligation for all digital communications, many companies are adopting these measures as part of their ESG agendas. However, a fundamental HTML attribute for screen reader language recognition – the “lang” attribute – is present in only about one-third (36.9%) of emails.

Tracking & Privacy: Progress Made, But Still Far from Compliant

The tracking and privacy score increased from 29.3 points in 2022 to 45.4 points in 2026. This score evaluates the technical implementation of measurement and privacy in emails.

A notable discrepancy exists in the finance sector: in 2026, it achieved a high compliance score of 87.0 points but a low tracking and privacy score of just 35.7 points.

“Companies Must Adapt to AI Assistants – or Risk Becoming Invisible”

“AI assistants are changing how people find, understand, and use information in their inboxes. Those who don’t adapt will become invisible,” says Stefan von Lieven, CEO of Elaine. “For businesses, this means emails must not only be reliably delivered but also structured to be relevant, accessible, and trustworthy. AI readiness isn’t an isolated technical add-on it’s part of a holistic marketing architecture where data, content, systems, and governance work together.”

“With Elaine.io, we help companies systematically build this quality from analyzing individual messages to integrating them into existing customer engagement processes. For us, this means AI-first by design.”
